Week 6 Recap: Cropdusters Stay in the Hunt as Playoffs Draw Near

As the Maryland summer heats up, so does the race for the Ripken League playoffs. The Cropdusters continued to play strong baseball during Week 6, posting a 3-1 record in completed games while battling through two rainouts and keeping themselves firmly in the playoff picture.

The week began Monday with an impressive 11-3 victory over the Silver Spring-Takoma Thunderbolts. Patrick Gozdan homered while Cade Walter and Owen McNeal each delivered multi-RBI performances as the offense came alive after a quieter stretch at the plate. On the mound, Nolan Ross, Austin Weiss, and Matt Russell combined for seven innings of four-hit, three-run baseball to secure another convincing win.

Tuesday shifted the focus to Shirley Povich Field for the Cal Ripken Sr. Collegiate Baseball League All-Star Game. The Cropdusters were well represented, sending six players to the midsummer classic. Andrew Duncan doubled and drove in two runs, while Landon Springmeyer added a stolen base. Logan Hartman and Landon Edwards also contributed on the mound, combining for 1⅔ scoreless innings. Although the Ripken League All-Stars fell to the Valley League by a 12-3 score, the Cropdusters' representatives showcased the talent that has fueled the team's successful season.

Mother Nature once again interrupted the schedule, as Wednesday's home game against the Southern Maryland Senators and Thursday's road game at Gaithersburg were both postponed and will be made up at a later date.

The action resumed Friday night as the Cropdusters welcomed the South County Braves to First Responder Field. Olney pulled away for a 9-4 victory thanks to a four-run fifth inning and another balanced offensive attack. Brian Scott provided one of the night's biggest highlights on his bobblehead night, racing around the bases for an inside-the-park home run that energized the home crowd. Zakye Hawkins added two stolen bases, while Kyle Rogers, Mac Crismond, Ben Berger, and Ben Jones combined to shut down the Braves. Rogers led the effort with five strong innings, allowing just two runs.

Saturday brought another complete team performance as the Dusters defeated the D.C. Grays 7-3. Andrew Duncan, Zakye Hawkins, Cade Walter, and Ryan Bouma all collected doubles to spark the offense. After allowing a leadoff home run, Ross Lindsey settled in to deliver three solid innings, and Joey "Nails" Zito closed the door with another impressive relief appearance as the Cropdusters improved to 20-9.

The winning streak came to an end Sunday night against Bethesda Big Train. Despite jumping out to an early 3-0 lead, the Dusters were unable to hold off the league leaders, falling 7-4. Zakye Hawkins continued his outstanding week with two more stolen bases, while Donis Rodriguez, Cade Ahearn, and Brian Scott each drove in a run. Logan Hartman provided four innings on the mound before Big Train rallied late to secure the victory.

The Cropdusters now sit at 20-10, ten games over .500 and just 1.5 games behind Big Train in the North Division. With the regular season entering its final stretch, every game carries added importance as the Dusters look to close the gap, build momentum, and secure a spot in the Ripken League playoffs.
