Opening Week Recap: Cropdusters Go 2-3-1 During Busy First Week of the 2026 Season

In what was a highly anticipated week around Olney, where country music could be heard playing from the loudspeakers at First Responder Field at SERVPRO Stadium, the crack of the bat was loud and crisp, and the smell of freshly cut grass was as good as ever, the local team didn’t disappoint.

As the Ripken League season kicked into gear this week, your Olney Cropdusters began their trek toward the 2026 Ripken League title, beginning regular season play this past Tuesday at Gaithersburg.

Despite falling by a score of 8-6 Tuesday night, it was great to see the Crops back in action. After trailing early in the game, the team showed signs of life throughout. In the late innings, they were able to string together multiple RBI base hits that drew them back into the game. However, it ended up not being enough. While coming away with the loss, the season opener provided positive signs of what was to come.

Then came the Home Opener. On Wednesday, First Responder Field at SERVPRO Stadium opened its doors to Cropdusters fans for the first time since July of 2025 in a competition against the Bethesda Big Train, slated for 6:00 PM. Wednesday was also Coach Adam Leader’s bobblehead night, where the first 150 households received a bobblehead of Coach Leader in a Cropduster plane. The game itself began on the wrong foot. The Crops found themselves down by many runs in the mid to late innings, but they would not go down without a fight. In the 6th inning, the Dusters plated 8 runs to overtake the Big Train, which, in turn, propelled them to a 13-7 victory.

This momentum from the 6th inning on Wednesday carried over to Thursday’s game against the Silver Spring-Takoma Thunderbolts, where the Crops found themselves romping the Bolts, scoring 25 times in the game and winning by a score of 25-1. The pitching was on lockdown, and the offense was pristine. The feel around the team was great, and the product on the field was even greater.

As for the end of the week on the diamond, things didn’t go as expected. On Friday, the Cropdusters faced the South County Braves for the first time in 2026 and, unfortunately, fell to them by a score of 4-2. Despite lots of traffic around the bases throughout the game, the Crops' offense couldn’t pull through. However, the pitching was stellar, and the bullpen was nails, as the team allowed the second-fewest runs they had all week.

As for Sunday, the Cropdusters began in solid fashion, only trailing by two runs midway through the game and looking destined for a comeback. Unfortunately, their opponent, the Gaithersburg Giants, whom they were seeing for the second time this season, piled on runs. By the end of the 7th inning, Gaithersburg led by 10, with the score being 13-3. As the sun shone down on OBGC, the Cropdusters finished up their final game of the week, losing 14-5.

While not ending on a strong note, it remains to be seen how the Dusters bounce back and show resilience. The team will find themselves playing at home five times this week, with games slated for Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

With plenty of baseball still ahead, the Cropdusters will look to build on the positives from Opening Week as they continue their pursuit of a Ripken League championship.
