Week 3 Recap: Big Bats Fuel Cropdusters to First Place

Coming off a four-game winning streak and carrying plenty of momentum into the third week of Ripken League play, the Cropdusters looked to continue their climb up the standings. By week's end, they had done just that, posting a 6-2 record and climbing into first place with the best overall record in the Cal Ripken Sr. Collegiate Baseball League.

On Monday, the Crops continued their homestand against the Southern Maryland Senators. Despite a strong offensive showing, the Dusters were unable to extend their winning streak, falling 9-7. One bright spot was Ryan Bouma, who launched his first home run of the season and showed signs of the power surge that would define the week ahead.

The Cropdusters wasted little time bouncing back.

On Tuesday, the Dusters traveled to Alexandria and delivered one of their most dominant performances of the season, defeating the Aces 13-0 in a seven-inning contest. Catcher Landon Springmeyer led the offensive attack with three hits, five RBIs, and two home runs. On the mound, Landon Edwards was outstanding, tossing four innings of one-hit shutout ball while striking out eight. Ben Jones followed with three scoreless innings of relief, allowing just one hit and striking out six to complete the shutout.

The same story continued Wednesday as the Cropdusters headed to Bethesda to take on Big Train. The Dusters rolled to a 9-3 victory behind another explosive offensive performance. Springmeyer stayed red hot, blasting his third home run in two days, while Bouma added a two-run homer in the eighth inning to help put the game away. Nolan Ross, Henry Lewis, and Kyle Rogers combined for another strong pitching effort, limiting Big Train to three runs despite nine hits.

Good things continued to come in bunches for the Dusters.

On Thursday, the Crops delivered another dominant performance, defeating the South County Braves 16-4. Springmeyer and Bouma homered again, joined this time by newcomer Ben Bolhouse, as the Cropdusters offense continued to overwhelm opposing pitching.

Friday marked a return to First Responder Field as the Dusters welcomed the Silver Spring-Takoma Thunderbolts under the lights. In a closely contested game, the Cropdusters pulled away late for a 5-3 victory. Marco Levari was stellar on the mound, allowing just two hits and two unearned runs while striking out six over five innings. Bouma added two RBIs as the Dusters secured their fourth consecutive victory.

Saturday presented the toughest challenge of the week, a road doubleheader against Southern Maryland. The Cropdusters edged the Senators 6-5 in game one to extend their winning streak to five games before falling 16-11 in the second game of the twin bill.

The Dusters closed the week on a high note Sunday, defeating the Silver Spring-Takoma Thunderbolts 14-1 on Father's Day. The victory capped a 6-2 week, the team's strongest stretch of the season, and vaulted the Cropdusters into first place in the Ripken League standings.

The Cropdusters now return home for a big week at First Responder Field, featuring five home games, including a Saturday doubleheader. Fans can also enjoy Cropdusters C.A.R.E.S. with KNINE Rescue and a variety of other promotions throughout the week.

With the best record in the league and momentum firmly on their side, the Dusters will look to continue their impressive run as the summer season heats up.
