Week 7 Recap: Cropdusters Win Four of Five to Set Up Stretch Run

With the regular season winding down and the playoff race tightening, the Olney Cropdusters delivered exactly the week they needed.

The Cropdusters won four of their five completed games, showcasing balanced offense, timely pitching and the resilience that has defined this club all summer. The strong week leaves Olney just one game behind division-leading Bethesda Big Train as the race for first place heads into its final stretch.

Olney opened the week with a convincing 13-8 victory over the Gaithersburg Giants. Seven different Cropdusters drove in runs while four pitchers combined to secure the win, highlighting the depth that has fueled the team's success throughout the season.

Tuesday brought one of the few setbacks of the week as Southern Maryland handed the Cropdusters an 11-2 loss. But as every baseball fan knows, there's always another game waiting, and Olney wasted no time responding.

The Cropdusters bounced back Wednesday with an impressive 8-2 victory over the Silver Spring-Takoma Thunderbolts. Zakye Hawkins led the offense with two doubles and two RBIs, while Kyle Rogers delivered six outstanding innings of two-run baseball to put the Dusters right back on track.

Thursday provided a scheduled day off before Friday's highly anticipated showdown with Bethesda Big Train was postponed because of poor air quality caused by Canadian wildfire smoke.

Action resumed Saturday with a doubleheader against Gaithersburg. In Game One, the Cropdusters earned a hard-fought 4-2 victory behind another strong pitching performance, with Cade Walter providing valuable insurance with a ninth-inning solo home run. Game Two, however, was suspended after severe weather and lightning moved into the area before it could be completed.

Olney finished the week in style Sunday, defeating the Thunderbolts once again behind another complete team effort. Seven different Cropdusters drove in runs while four pitchers combined to shut down Silver Spring-Takoma's offense. Joey Zito closed the door with a scoreless ninth inning, and Zakye Hawkins provided one of the week's most exciting moments by stealing home to help seal the victory.

Winning four of five games couldn't have come at a better time. With just a handful of games remaining, every inning carries postseason implications, and the Cropdusters have positioned themselves for an exciting finish to the regular season.

The coming week will determine playoff seeding as Olney completes suspended games, makes up postponed contests and continues its pursuit of first-place Bethesda Big Train. If Week 7 proved anything, it's that the Cropdusters are playing some of their best baseball when it matters most.
